The ruses - a coyote tale/Diane di Prima

From her book, Loba (Penguin, 1973)

The ruses – a coyote tale

        Diane di Prima

Sometimes you take up with the trap  &
run with the metal between yr teeth,
At times it is better to chew off
your leg.
You have in this case to consider
the trail of blood.
Sometimes for weeks it is better
not to eat, the meat is poisoned, but
you wait it out,
   knowing the creatures are not
consistent,  they forget. Or they will
move on.  It is hard to explain this
to the cubs.
    You keep downwind, stick to
the water; journey in the thick mist
or at the dark of the moon.

There come the safe times when
we congregate in the snow,
under large barren trees & each
 of us is a flame.
   an offering to the moon.
At such times it is unnecessary
to sing.

Os ardís – relato da coiota.

(do livro Loba)

Algumas vezes você foge com toda e armadilha &/
corre com o metal entre os dentes,
   Outras vezes é melhor sacrificar
a perna.
Neste caso você terá que considerar
as pistas do sangue
Por vezes é melhor
passar fome,  a carne está envenenada.
você precisa ter paciência,
   sabendo que as criaturas são
 inconsistentes, elas esquecem. Ou irão
       embora. Difícil é
explicar isto aos filhotes.
Você caminha junto ao vento, perto
d’água; viaja na neblina espessa
ou no escuro da lua.

Aproximam-se também os tempos seguros de
nos juntarmos na neve, embaixo
das árvores sem folhas onde
 cada um é flama.
Oferenda para a lua.
Em tempos como esses é desnecessário
cantar.

More from Hettie Jones

Praise
                        for Marie Ponsot

All praise the midweek market,
the first-of-the-season sexy zucchinis
gazing up from their crowded
boxes

All praise the cherries, their tight
red bellies, the sweet, slender stems
and the pit, ah the pit, to be nursed
in the mouth, cajoled to give up
its last sweet hold, praise

them.  Praise all.  All praise.

Louvor.

Louvemos a feira no meio da semana,
as primeiras abobrinhas sensuais da temporada,
olhando para fora
de suas caixas lotadas

Todos elogiam as cerejas, a suas firmes
barrigas vermelhas, a doce carne e
o caroço, sementinha,
que será chupado na boca
até ser convencido a abandonar
seu último dulçor, louvemos a eles.
Louvemos tudo isso, louvemos.
