Yin and yang

Here goes, in English:

Dear boy, it's quite a simple matter.
We are made of the same stuff.
There's that same little machine,
the same pulsing red muscle, the same
purple aorta in my chest. I breathe
the same damaged air.
I have absolutely no essence.
I live my daily life in the very same city
of old ports and starving sailors
which one day provides me shelter
and the next, takes away all that is
best in me. How could my desire
be any different? To you,
a black ink stain that calls my bluff.
To me, a warm little bird
that has just fallen from its nest.
It spreads its wings.

Yin e yang.

Meu amigo, é muito simples.
Somos feitos da mesma matéria.
Tenho no meu peito a mesma
maquininha, um músculo vermelho
que pulsa, a mesma aorta púrpura. Respiro

Hostess/ Anfitriã by Tony Hoagland

Dessa festa só lembro.
do vestidinho preto da anfitriã
preso apenas por uma
alçinha de seda crua

que escorregava por seu ombro
- e assim, enquanto ela falava comigo
sobre o mercado imobiliário ou sobre o vinagrete,

eu observava a alcinha cair
pouco a pouco
por seu braço sedoso
até o último momento,
e seu encolher de ombro
para volta-la ao lugar

ah o assunto desse vestido
era amorfo e impossível de enunciar
e afligia a todos

como as fronteiras de um território disputado
ou os limites de uma personalidade transtornada.
era como uma história que queria ver
chegar à conclusão, mas

era também como uma história
que emperrou no meio, e que continuava
quase indo para frente, mas não
e quase indo, de novo-

Levei a noite toda para entender
que foi o vestido fadado a falhar assim;

Untitled/Hettie Jones.

On the bus
from Newark to New York
the baby pukes
into the fox collar
of her only coat

She wipes the collar
and the baby's soft face
then takes her toddler
by the hand
and heads for the subway

where the toddler
sleeps
at her knee
and she
       herself
stares
out the window
over the head
of the sleeping baby
She is twenty-seven
and very tired

               Let me always
support her
             Having been her
befriend her

(versão)

No ônibus
entre Newark e Nova Iorque
o bebê vomita
na gola de pele
do seu único casaco de inverno

Ela limpa a gola
e o rosto macio do nenêm
em seguida toma a pequena
pela mão
e pegam rumo ao metrô

onde a pequena dorme
sobre seu joelho
e ela
              mesma
fixa o olhar
pela janela
por cima da cabeça
da pequena que dorme
Ela tem 27 anos
e está muito cansada
                      Me deixe sempre
apoiá-la
                    Tendo sido ela,

tornar-me amiga sua

Working on it...

Here is an old one I tried to edit in locus but for some reason couldn't scroll down far enough on my old posts (it's from 2010).  So, it was either giving up or re-typing, and obviously I chose the latter.
Not such a great one, but I did some major changes, and cuts, which I think now leaves it standing on its own two feet:

Visual.

    (photo exhibit, Las Ramblas, 2010)

A blue dress hanging on the cottage porch.
Small fingers of a girl pushing her hair back,
adjusting her barrette.  Fingers and hair.
Rows of cinderblock buildings, and inside -
a shaky table covered with plastic, a
stunned grandchild gazing out, into,
beyond.  An ancient tv, lifted from
the gypsy's cart, flickers: snow covering
train tracks, or a warm place
where buildings crumbled at dawn.
(And now no water, no mouthfuls of rice
or potato.) Does he wonder what will come?
Something to lead him away
from the rusty playground
of the dusty vila, the
small blue bicycle left
to its busted wheel.
