Rewriting...

Lucky us

We are the lucky ones
standing here on dry ground, this
autumn Saturday, this Plaza Real
in  a reeling world. These are days
welded together,  slow motion moments
to pick  and choose and linger, cafés and
train tickets, a simple mosaic or a labyrinth,
time breathing its magical chant over some
unfolding future.  I can  rebraid your hair
with a hundred colored bands, invoke a
thousand warm nights just like this one,
with its Mediterranean calm, with its
welcome.  No use anyway trying to sleep
with the neighbors  up talking so loud,
no use trying to sleep now, with this late
knowledge that something as desperate
     to me
            as love
is but a moment of respite
is but a small, flattened clearing
that looks like a place to lie down.
Come closer, just for a moment.
I promise to stop talking, overlook the
details. There is a sweet jasmine smell
in the breeze, hours that taste like honey,
a trace of mint lingering in your hair.
I will stop asking these questions,
stop second-guessing my luck.
Wake up, peel those eyelids. The
music is gentle now, the night so clear.
There is no pack of strays to follow you home,
there are no unlit corners where one split second
could change your life.

Kendra DeColo... continuando!

A chuva veio, rachando as
materializando no doce vapor.

Something to vaporize inside of
Kendra DeColo

By the end of summer, my tongue
was the size of a flask in a hitch hiker's pocket,
a swiveling road making small talk with dust
particles.  I kept wanting more and more of it:                                                                                             ´
the temple-shaped clouds crowding
the skyline, a bad movie glittering against
the bus window, hung like a chandelier
inside the pulp of infinite rooms.
It smelled of oranges and made up
for lost time, inventing flavors for each
shade of blue tucked into the leaves
of passing trees. The rain came, slashing
the clouds until they oozed into one another
like silver, like flesh swallowing
a bullet and squeezing out a seed. The way a star
can rip open the night sky and can't tell
the many seconds it took, stunned
in the after-light, wanting to hoard each kernel
each fissure, each spark inside the world's
tallest elevator, shanty-towns built of scrap-
light for people like us who know angels
do the dirty work, collecting the beauty
we waste: this achy vein of road and air,
insatiable cloud-shaped like the fire's
imagination, coming home if only to let
my heart flash its gills, erupt into an epilepsy
of minnow at your feet, for the things
we loved, against, inside of, for the things
we won't survive, the taste of summer
and all that will be there without us,

materializing in the sweet vapor.

the gift /a dádiva

there is a ripe
apple red as the
muscle of my heart
in an outstretched
hand. It is so obdurate,
 so palpable that
 you turn away
 as if something purer
could come down
from the mist of
the mountains, as if
from some angle
of light you could
capture me, unclothed
of all the jagged and
rounded things that
have weighed me
down, lifted me up,
turned me into

everything i am not.

há uma maça
madura e vermelha como
o músculo do meu coração
na minha mão estendida.  ela é
tão rija , tão palpável  que
te afasta, como se algo mais
puro pudesse descer com a neblina
das montanhas, como se em algum
ângulo de luz pudesse me capturar,
                       despida
de todas as coisas denteadas ou
redondas que pesaram, ou me
levantaram, ou me fizeram virar tudo aquilo

que não sou.

final words/palavras finais

in my dream you tell me
you are dancing with fire.
'touch it', you say.  a girl
walks by, her hair the color
of newborn flame.  or
pumpkins. i look again
into the picture, see only
black background,  and
in the next frame, squirrels playing,
their cheeks round with nuts.
soon all falls silent. it is
summertime already and
     here i am stranded
on this side of the ocean,
or at some other distance
equally unswimmable.

palavras finais

no sonho você me conta
que dança com fogo.
'toque-o'  me diz.  uma
garota passa na minha frente,
seu cabelo a cor de flama nova.
ou abóboras.  olho de novo
para a imagem, vejo só
um fundo preto, e na próxima,
esquilos que brincam, suas
bochechas cheias de sementes.
logo cai um silêncio terrível.
é o  verão que entra, e eu aqui,
atolada
deste lado do oceano, ou
à alguma outra distância
igualmente impossível
de atravessar
a nado.

Ao percorrer uma pequena cidade -Kendra DeColo

“The truck was incinerated, and it is still burning.”
New York Times, 3 de julho de 2010.

Ouviram música
antes de ouvir o temporal

antes do caminhão avultar-se
a um lado da estrada

que como poeirenta  fina pele de cobra
atravessava a cidadezinha

um bando de aves expandindo
as costelas de árvores esbeltas

e onde a estrada espetava
seu dedo em direção ao rio

onde o rio
era a voz de uma mulher

andando para trás
dentro de um sonho

onde sonhavam
em comandar o céu

onde o céu engolia
pássaros e música e onde

as crianças tinham se ensinado
a juntar ar e gasolina

e agora um cachorro anda em círculos
por sobre as cinzas e a terra

úmida cuspe um coração gorduroso
e onde pássaros vermelhos perfuram o entardecer

uma mulher esfaqueia
a terra com sua pá

trabalha a pesar do suor
e os insetos que consomem seus braços

até o momento dela pisar nas profundezas
sem saber como ou quê

onde a estrada se tornou
veia rasgada onde a  noite sangrou óleo

e os corpos foram engolidos
na música verde

e se alguma  vez você seguiu
a música que conduzia por uma vereda escura

você chegando silenciado numa igreja
 com os olhos enormes

dos vivos como folhas molhadas
revirando dentro de você

me diga então  a quem agradecer
quando der aqueles passos que te botam
   no mundo

aí onde uma árvore desperdiça
seus brotos aos teus pés

Through a small city/Kendra DeColo.

They heard music
before they heard the storm

before the truck piles
onto the side of the road

that ran dusty and snake-skinned
through a small town

a flock swelling
inside the ribs of thin trees

and where the road spiked
a finger towards the river

where the river
was the voice of a woman

walking backwards
into a dream

where they dreamed
of running the sky

where the sky swallowed
birds and music and where

children had taught themselves
to gather air and gasoline

and a dog now makes circles
into the ash and damp

dirt spits up an oily heart
and where red birds pierce the dusk

a woman stabs
her shovel into the ground

works through sweat
and insects eating her arms

until she stands in the deep
not knowing how or what

where the road was a ripped vein
and the night bled oil

and bodies swallowed up
in the green music

and if you have ever followed
singing down a dark path

arriving at a church hushed
with the enormous eyes

of the living like wet leaves
turning through you

tell me who you thank
when you step out into the world

where a tree has wasted
its blossoms at your feet.

Terra Adentro

Tinha chovido.
A terra roxa coberta por uma camada
de barro escorregadio, e em todas as direções,
o horizonte impossível.  Lado a lado,
o animal e o humano, um menino
que aninha  a irmazinha e uma mulher
que põe as mãos à tarefa:   a lenta reconstrução
da cidade onde tudo começou.
Caminhos, desejos, destinos:
Dias mais largos da minha vida.

Inland.

The rains had come and gone.
A deep earth, its crust of slimy
mud, and in all directions,
the horizon impossible.  Side by side,
the animal, the human, a boy
cradling his sister, a woman
putting her hands to the task:
the slow rebuilding of the place
where it had all begun. Roads,
desire, destinies:  days of life
at their widest.

still trying

And all of a sudden, one gets
so old. a blue crow wings its way
through my heart, butterflies flutter.
a native dancer places his hand
on my shoulder.  i try for a moment
to follow the beat,  or a pattern
unknown.  he chuckles and then
makes off into the woodlands, into
  the smoky morning with its
scent of comal y tortillas
 floating back  through the mist
 of other mountains. Come now,
befriend me. a chest heavy with loss,
and the youngsters playing just out
beyond the dumping ground, oblivious
 to endings.
