Versão

A ausência.

oceano e o desejo do homem
de se ausentar     o que é
uma forma de começar de novo. Eu
escrevo isto como vingança    e a palavra
porque nada tem a ver. O motivo
se esquece. O homem atirou.

The Absence - Tess Gallagher

Vou ao resgate meio aleatório de poemas escondidos em livros meio velhos da minha biblioteca.
Vai este de Tess Gallagher, do livro Instructions to the Double (Graywolf Press, 1976). Logo vem
versão!

The Absence

I am writing this out of vengeance
which is a hurt given to the self
in the name of another. It has to do
with becoming a purpose
which is an absence not unlike
a gun. A man fired one
into an ocean in back of my house.
It was an act of bravery. The birds
went free because it was my
back porch and an ocean
behind it. He knew a target
when he saw one, those fists loose
in his eye. That is the way of targets,
one as good as another until
you decide. The ocean was there
and a recognition of the gun
for the ocean and the need too
of the man to leave himself out
which is a way of beginning
again. I am writing this
out of vengeance and the word
because has nothing to do
with it. The reason forgets
itself. The man has fired.

Poema de amor para um incrédulo / Sandra Cisneros

(Título original: Love Poem for a Non-Believer)

Porque eu sinto saudade de
você, repasso com a minha mão
a lisura da minha coxa, a curva
do meu quadril, minha bunda
arredondada como uma manga. Imagino-a
como se a mão fosse tua, dedilhando
minhas costelas, o harpejo dos
meus seios, a clavícula que você adora
e eu não.

Meu pescoço é fino.
Você poderia contorná-lo
com só uma mão e
arrancar-me a vida
se quisesse

Cortei meus cabelos.
Não dá mais para puxá-los.
Apenas um jato de fios pretos
entre os dedos agora

Suas mãos friozinhas
passeiam por minha mandíbula
a pele das pálpebras
a nuca
macia como uma boca

e quando nos abrimos como uma
maçã rachada no meio e vemos
o coração
do coração
do coração      essa parte que
você não eu não
mostramos para ninguém
essa parte que queremos recolher

tão logo desenrole
como uma bandeira de seda
ou o berro vindo da mesquita
no horário da oração          não teremos
palavra nenhuma para isto
a não ser      talvez
crença.

Analysis (new work-in-progress)

analysis

if things were as simple as this-
a world divided into givers and takers-
you and i might be face to face
on opposite sides of the gameboard
playing out the last round in the only
language we'd learned, tactics  not
meant to inflict deep wounds.

but the mestres tell us it can't be so,
that i, for example, am round as an overfed
guppy,  at risk of bursting from life -
and yet so hungrily
 return to your door
with my beggar's tin, in my
Halloween rags,  wading in my wicked
pool of melancholy. as for you, my dear,
the word is not yet out  -  so silence is
safer, and lingering in the sunlight,
 listening harder for the pinching
                     cues.

Tantas Cosas Asustan, Tantas

Tantas Coisas Assustam, Tantas

Tantas coisas assustam. Tantas.
Os mortos e os vivos.

O que a escuridão não nos permite
e o que nos permite

Passos no pátio
assim como o silêncio

E coisas simples.
Aritmética. O aluguel.

O infinito também assusta.
Números. O céu.
Deuses que sempre foram e serão.

O que é pior?
Estar  sempre só
ou estar com alguém para sempre

E o finito aterroriza.
Nossas vidas por exemplo.

O amor assusta.
Igual a lua e os militares
E pesam muito.

Não um por um
Mas todos juntos
Como bolas de gude
numa latinha

A felicidade, pelo contrário,
é assunto diferente.
Coisa de pipas voando.

dog night

Noite de cão

This is one of them no-show nights.
Her man gets sidetracked on the way home,
stopped by some friend who pops up, lighting up
bright as an orange-bulbed street lamp
just as a fog sets over the city. An ecstatic
'Man, where you been all these years?'
and grins as wide as embraces are hurried,
and they sit down at the  bar on the corner
on weathered red stools with yellow foam
gaping  from  cracks and  the
 glasses empty, one after another,
as the night shrinks before them, stories
winding up and up and then down again
like a life when it gets stuck at the place
no doors want to open.
Back at her place
his lady is sleeping, television blaring and the telephone
off the hook buzzing alone into the madrugada.

"Just like many"

How can the artist
the one with the silver voice
and the endless courage, be
so quickly forsaken? Her man
leaves, the one
who wanted her money
or her fame. She tries to forget
the sound of the door
banging three times
in her face, heavy boots
stomping down the hall, resounding
on the floorboards like
a thousand bolting moose. She
tries to remember the sunlight
breaking on the water, remembers
her brothers coming home from
the war, the whole and the wounded
dancing on the streets, that “never again”...
She remembers, also, the last  few
coins, the hidden letters, that one last card
and that old restlessness stirring
under layers of time, remembers
that she can still get out to the docks,
catch the next boat, step out onto the
deck and sing.
